  • Scalar

    In physics (scalar quantities and scalar fields): Scalars — quantities described by a single number (temperature, mass, electric potential) — were part of mathematics and natural philosophy long before modern attribution. Formal mathematical treatment of scalar and vector fields developed in the 19th century with the work of mathematicians such as Carl Friedrich Gauss and George Green.

    Scalar fields (fields whose quanta are spin-0 particles) The Higgs field, a prominent scalar field in particle physics, was proposed in the 1960s by Peter Higgs and others.

    In 1879, a Dutch physiologist named Jan Evangelista Purkinje (often spelled Purkinje) first used the word "plasma" to describe the clear fluid that remains after blood cells are removed. A few decades later, in 1928, the physicist Irving Langmuir popularized the term "plasma" for the fourth state of matter — a very different thing from blood plasma. Or do they differ?
